Open Division Rules
This contest commemorates the distinguished Hawera author, Ronald Hugh Morrieson. Entries are invited from all residents or ratepayers of the Taranaki region over the age of 13 years.
South Taranaki District Council will award $500 for first prize; $300 as second prize and $200 as third prize.
THE RULES of the Open Division are as follows:
¨ You must not be eligible for the secondary school division of the Awards.
¨ You must be 13 years or older.
¨ The work must be original and of a literary form, e.g. short story, poem or drama script. It must never
have been published prior to this competition.
¨ If the work is a short story it should not exceed 2,000 words.
¨ The work should reflect aspects of present day life in the Taranaki area, or a revealing
character description of a local person, rather than science-fiction, futuristic or foreign
settings.
¨ More than one entry per person is permitted.
¨ All work must be titled.
¨ The entrant’s name is not to be written on the work itself.
¨
Entries must be on a word document and submitted by way of email as an attachment.
Please state on the email that accompanies the work:
· that it is an original,
· has not appeared in any publication,
· it is the entrant’s own work.
· State the competition you are entering (Open or Secondary School)
· number of words
· Personal address and phone number ¨ The Adjudicator’s decision will be final and no correspondence will be entered into.
¨ All work will remain the property of the authors, but the South Taranaki District Council shall be entitled
to publish any entry on at least one occasion.
ENTRIES CLOSE with the South Taranaki District Council midnight Sunday 19th September 2010

Secondary School Division Rules
This contest commemorates the distinguished Hawera author, Ronald Hugh Morrieson. Entries are invited from all secondary school students whose parents or guardians are residents or ratepayers of the South Taranaki District.
The South Taranaki District Council awards $500 as First prize, $300 as Second prize and $200 as Third prize.
THE RULES of the contest are as follows:
¨ The work must be original and of a literary form, e.g. short story, poem or drama script.

¨ Teachers may advise a student on their work in the initial stages however the final entry piece must not be edited by a teacher.
